Confessions of a Sales Pro: A Random Rant from the Road

No confession today. Today’s post is what Iโ€™m calling a Random Rant.

As merchant services reps, we live in our cars. We spend half our lives driving from strip mall to industrial park, logging miles between cold calls, terminal drops, and merchant visits. So I know you feel my pain on this: left-lane drivers who drag along at 57 miles per hour are some of the most selfish, self-centered motorists on the planet.

I can say that because left-lane campers aren’t a protected class.

You know the exact type. They think it’s cute to drive 5 miles below the speed limit in a lane intended for going 10 to 15 over, and it completely wrecks the flow of traffic for everyone else. They simply do not care. It doesn’t even register in their minds that they are the primary cause of traffic slowing to a crawl. Half the time, they are staring at their phones, drifting between lanes, and causing avoidable accidents that delay the rest of us for hours.

The Deeper Systemic Disconnect

This isn’t just a driving nuisance; it is a direct ripple effect of a society that has been programmed out of caring for others. Look at modern media outlets, social media feeds, and everyday engagements. We have stopped caring about other people. We’ve stopped holding doors open. We’ve stopped saying “please” and “thank you.”

This growing indifference is a direct result of blockages instituted by systems that educate our children and shape a society promoting the ideologies of those who want absolute control. How do you conquer and divide people? You cut off their communication and isolate them from one another.

We have literally been cut off from our natural source of power and energy. My daughter used to talk to me about how disconnected weโ€™ve become from natural energy, and I’ll be honestโ€”I used to laugh and tell her she was completely nuts. But think about it for a second. Go walk outside barefoot in the grass for any length of time, and you just feel different. Calmer. More grounded. Maybe that’s the real reason we’re all so much more relaxed at the beachโ€”it’s not just the ocean air, it’s that we’re actually barefoot and connected to the earth for once.

Rubber soles on our shoes inhibit that natural flow of electricity and physical energy. In much the same way, we’ve allowed modern conventions to insulate us from genuine human interaction.

Connecting Over Closing

I challenge you today to break with what has become the norm and get back to connecting with the people you meet. In field sales, itโ€™s far too easy to view every local merchant as just another processing statement or commission check, but real impact starts with caring.

We can’t take our portfolios with us when we’re gone, but the good things we do for others will stick forever.

Remember: rubber soles can take your feet where you need to go today, but caring for and connecting with people is what will actually grow your soul.

Happy Selling,

David
