A Table Full of Success (And the One Man Who Made It Possible)

As the residuals stack up and the wins become more frequent, it’s easy to let pride take the wheel. We’ve all met that agent who hits a certain level of success and suddenly claims to be a “self-made” individual.

But let’s be real: nobody builds a large portfolio in a vacuum. Someone took a chance on you. Someone showed you how to read a statement, how to handle a “no,” and how to navigate the complex world of interchange.

The Power of a Single Introduction

I’ll never forget how I got my start. I think back to one of my best friends and mentor, Mark Akers, whose introduction to this business quite literally changed my life.

Recently, we were all together at a restaurant on the Mississippi Gulf Coast having lunch. As I looked around that table, it hit me: every single person sitting there was in that room because of Mark. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes a person comes into your life and doesn’t just make you better—they elevate everyone around them.

Without that initial guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

The Secret to Longevity: Never Forget the “NO”s

The most successful people in this industry didn’t start with a high-volume book of business; they started with nothing. Those who stay at the top for the long haul are the ones who remain humble. They remember:

  • The days when they were one “not interested” away from quitting.
  • The frustration of unskilled pitches and lost deals.
  • The tough months where the electricity got shut off because the bills weren’t being met.

Those days weren’t enjoyable, but they were part of the process. By remembering that struggle, you ensure you never go backward.

Loyalty is the Highest Currency

In an industry where “agent hopping” is common and loyalty is rare, those who stay true to the mentors and partners who helped them are the ones who truly win. When you build solid, loyal relationships, the rewards aren’t just financial—they’re foundational. Loyalty opens doors to opportunities that a “self-made” ego can’t reach.

Pay the Residual Forward

Remembering your roots is only half the battle. Once you’ve reached a level of success, your next mission is to become the mentor you once needed.

  • Great mentors breed more inspirational leaders.
  • Helping others grow is the fastest way to scale your own influence.
  • The joy of mentoring is incredible; it allows you to grow even more while helping others get theirs.

The Challenge: Who helped you land your first big account? Who coached you through your first dry spell? Stay humble, stay grateful, and never allow pride to get in the way. Help as many people as possible along the way and be that positive mentor.

Never let your pride outpace your gratitude

Happy Selling,

David
