Welcome back to another week of Confessions! Grab your lukewarm coffee, take a seat, and letโs talk about a classic trap that burns out more sales reps than cold calling rejection ever could: the endless chase for the “better split.”
If youโve been in this industry for more than six months or if you read any of the Facebook groups or spend five minutes on LinkedIn you see agents doing it every single day. A rep starts with a solid ISO, builds a modest portfolio, and then gets targeted by a recruiter or a flashy post promising the moon.
“Why are you working on a 70/30 split? Come over to our ISO we give 80-90% residuals, zero monthly fees, and free equipment!”
Suddenly, the rep gets dollar signs in their eyes. They jump ship. Eight months later, they do it again for a 95% split. A year later, they’re looking for a “100% payout” deal.
From the outside, it looks like a smart business move. But for those of us who have watched agents play ISO roulette for years, we know the dirty truth: chasing splits is usually a race to broke.
Here is the raw confession about why ISO hopping is destroying your momentum, your portfolio, and your residual checks.
1. The Math Illusion: 90% of Garbage is Still Garbage
The oldest trick in the processor playbook is giving an agent a massive revenue split while quietly padding the buy rate schedule.
Newer reps are so focus on the percentage number the 80%, 85%, or 90% split without ever noticing the underlying schedule and most never read the agent contract. Residuals drop below $500, residuals held, don’t submit 2,3 deals a a mos, residuals held, didn’t price them just right, you get the picture.
- ISO A offers a 70% split on true Interchange pass through with a 2 cent transaction fee. 2 BP bin and and zero monthly account markups.
- ISO B offers a 90% split on a schedule with a 5 cent transaction fee, $0.10 gateway markups, padded batch fees, and a mandatory $15 monthly “reporting fee” per account and don’t get me started on the PCI or NOn PCI fees.
When you actually run the numbers, ISO A pays more money on the exact same portfolio. ISO B isn’t giving you 90% of their margin; theyโre giving you 90% of a heavily inflated profit margin that makes your merchants harder to close and far easier for competitors to steal.
2. High Splits Mean Zero Back Office Support
There is no free lunch in merchant processing. If an ISO is giving away 90% or 95% of the residual margin, where do you think they are cutting costs?
They cut support.
When you join a “high split / low-margin” ISO, you are no longer just a sales rep. You are now the risk department, the terminal deployment team, the underwriting negotiator, and the 24/7 tech support desk. The moment a merchantโs batch gets held or a terminal throws a tamper error, you’re left screaming into a void because your processorโs support team consists of one overworked contractor answering emails three days late.
Every hour you spend playing customer service rep to keep an account from canceling is an hour you aren’t out in the field writing new business.
3. The Re boarding Trap Destroys Your Portfolio
The biggest tragedy of the ISO hopper is watching them spend half their career moving old merchants instead of finding new ones. I know, this is a NO NO, but we all know it happens.
When an agent switches ISOs, they inevitably try to re board their existing portfolio to get the “new, higher split.”
- You have to walk back into a happy merchantโs store.
- You have to explain why they need to sign new paperwork.
- You have to reprogram or swap out equipment that was already working fine.
Guess what happens when you disturb a quiet, happy merchant? You remind them that they have options. A percentage of those merchants will tell you “no thanks,” start looking at their processing statements, or take a call from a competitor. Instead of growing your revenue, you end up shrinking your portfolio just to earn a slightly higher percentage on fewer accounts.
The Hard Truth About Residual Stability
Real wealth in this industry isn’t built on a flash in the pan 90% split. Itโs built on portfolio density, high retention, and long term vesting. Wealth in this industry in built on relationships, both with merchants and the ISO’s we o business with.
A 70% split with an ISO that offers rock solid underwriting, instant equipment deployment, and true 24/7 support will make you far richer over ten years than a 90% split with a fly by night processor that leaves you stranded the second a chargeback hits.
Stop looking at the split percentage in isolation. Look at the true cost schedule, look at the contract vesting terms, and look at the support behind the brand.
The Real Truth: A sales pro who holds a 70% split and spends 100% of their time closing new business will always out earn a rep who spends all day fighting with bad processors for an extra 10%. Build where you can grow, stay put, and protect your pipeline.
